In October of 2004, the center opened an afterschool program to address the increasing incidence of children being alone and unsupervised during after-school hours. From 3:30 – 5:00; on Monday through Fridays, youth receive structured activities that help with their classroom studies as well as provide positive youth development experiences. Following is a list and short overview of each.
Homework Help - The center is open five days per week to assist with homework assignments for youth in grades K-12. Staff members make every attempt to coordinate these efforts with teachers and administration from local schools to ensure that every child’s educational needs are cared for. Progress is monitored through communications with teachers and/or obtaining copies of the student’s report cards and progress reports.
Educational Enhancement Activities - The center is open five days per week for games and activities for youth in grades K-12. Staff directs these efforts with focus being placed on anything school related. This includes not only the improvement of study skills and habits, but also the development of social and communications skills; leadership and team building activities; and the development of coping skill mechanisms. Staff also uses creative and stimulating activities to increase the student’s interest and understanding of concepts in math and science.
Summer Programs - During summer months, the center provides a wide array of activities that are designed to be fun and invigorating. Incorporating educational enhancement into these activities is essential during the planning process. Examples include learning about science, biology, and the eco system through hands on activities such as visiting local streams and the fish hatchery; learning how choose and care for an animal; learning how to prepare simple snacks and meals safely; and crafts such as designing and making jewelry or making kites that can actually fly.
Youth Quest – Youth Quest is a program targeted toward youth who have a high risk of being involved with the Juvenile Justice system. A “Life Coach” is provided who works with the youth in overcoming issues that prevent them from going to school on a regular basis and otherwise become productive members of the community.
